ABOUT THE FILM

“Umoja” means “unity” in the Kiswahili language of the Sambura women of Kenya. Cast out by their men, who blame them when they accuse British soldiers of rape, the ostracized women form their own village nearby. The men appear equally unsettled by the loss of women to perform “women’s work”, and the success of the women as they build homes and schools and sell beadwork to supportive female tourists. Confrontations, sometimes hilarious, culminate in the arrival of the regional chief to restore tradition. What will happen?
