ABOUT THE FILM
Oscar-nominated Connie Field turns her lens on an artistic response to a shameful war crime, as composer Jonathan Berger, the famous Kronos Quartet and Vietnamese virtuoso Van-Anh Vo develop a richly evocative opera incorporating traditional Vietnamese instruments. The hauntingly beautiful music underscores the drama with unerring clarity – alternating between bursts of frenzied activity and achingly sweet hymn-like harmonies – as librettist Harriet Chessman and tenor Rinde Eckert bring to life the story of terminally-ill helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, who witnessed and exposed a pivotal moment of the Vietnam War: the horrifying 1968 massacre of 500 villagers by US troops.
