ABOUT THE FILM

Is the foundation of the British welfare state a lost opportunity destroyed by Thatcherism, or a project still awaiting completion? Ken Loach seeks an answer in conversations with those who remember its beginnings. 1945 was a pivotal year in British history: through the compelling faces and voices of ageing nurses, doctors, miners, union officials and others, alongside a few economists and historians, the film revisits the new kind of socialism that shaped that era, and reflects upon where those ideals are now. Loach’s elderly interlocutors tell the kind of deeply personal stories which will soon no longer be heard.
