ABOUT THE FILM

She was an Afghan refugee on the streets of Tehran, having fled the Taliban when she was ten years old. Sonita was so shy, she could barely speak, yet she found a way to learn to read and write. In a land where women are forbidden to sing or listen to music, she decided she wanted to become a rapper. When it was time for her to be sold into marriage, she asked the film-maker to buy her, and get her into the studio. She “had a million things to say”. For a young woman with no birth certificate, no passport and no future, the impossible happened.
