After 40 years together, artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara have a relationship that provides both chuckles and unease for the viewer. It was unbalanced from the beginning, when young art student Noriko tumbled into passion with much-older avant-garde artist Ushio on her arrival in New York. It now combines elements of real affection and real abuse. But Noriko’s dissatisfaction has provoked a flowering of her art, and the balance is shifting.
