No Burqas Behind Bars begins with Sara, a handcuffed and burqa-clad woman who is being imprisoned se for loving an unsuitable man, arriving at Afghanistan’s Takhar Prison. Behind the prison walls she sheds her burqa and joins a community of women with children who have found a kind of refuge. She enlists a child’s help in sending notes to her lover in the male prison next door. This beautifully filmed Swedish documentary by Nima Sarvestiani, focuses on Sara and two other women, Nadjibeh and Sima, to give us a rare glimpse into the dangers and dreams and uncertain future of Afghan women.
