Cutie and the Boxer

After 40 years together, artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara have a relationship that provides both chuckles and unease for the viewer. It was unbalanced from the beginning, when young art student Noriko tumbled into passion with much-older avant-garde artist Ushio on her arrival in New York. It now combines elements of real affection and real abuse. But Noriko’s dissatisfaction has provoked a flowering of her art, and the balance is shifting. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary since we selected it, this entertaining slice of artistic life will have you pondering devotion, personal power and creativity.
