Academy award for the best documentary in 1984. The original documentary provided a basis for the research for the film Milk, which is playing at The Fritz this Festival Weekend and throughout the following week. In the 1970s, San Francisco was a center of gay political power, and a battle was fought over a proposed law to limit gay rights. Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials anywhere and Mayor George Moscone were killed by Dan White in 1978. This horrific event helped define gay politics, as we know it.
